Staff photo by Matt Hamilton /Park volunteers fire a 12-pound howitzer Sept. 18, 2021, during artillery demonstrations for the 158th anniversary of the Battle of Chickamauga. This year, the artillery demonstrations are scheduled at Winfrey Field at the Chickamauga Battlefield at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 18. Other programs commemorating the 159th anniversary of the Civil War battle continue through Tuesday, September 20.

Here’s what’s happening in the Chattanooga area this week.

GOOD TO KNOW

The first day of fall arrives at 9:03 p.m. Thursday in the Northern Hemisphere, though a look around the landscape shows that the oaks and maples haven’t gotten the message yet. If you want a way to tell when the leaves will start to change, the 2022 fall foliage map published by smokymountains.com gives the outlook for the entire United States. The interactive map plots the full progress for each region, county by county. In the Chattanooga area we will wait until the week of October 31st for the best leaf preview, a little earlier for higher elevations. A disclaimer says the map won’t be 100% accurate, but is meant to help travelers “better plan their trips to have the best opportunity to catch the max color each year.”
