Government to Hold Inclusive Education Events Till Dec 3 – The New Indian Express

CHENNAI: In an effort to raise awareness of inclusive education in public schools, the Department of Inclusive School Education is organizing a series of events ranging from Children’s Day to December 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The program was launched on Monday with a commitment to schools, emphasizing the right to education.

The events include outreach rallies on Nov. 16 at two high schools or high schools in each union panchayat. Students in grades 6 to 9, members of the school management committee, local leaders and doctors can participate in the rally. Artistic and cultural activities will take place on November 17 and 22.

“Students can also be encouraged to write positive statements about their friends with disabilities, as part of the activity. Doctors and nurses may also be invited to events to highlight the importance of enrolling children with disabilities at the right time in schools,” reads a circular from Samagra Director Shiksha Abhiyan.

Sports competitions for students with disabilities will be held on November 29 at Inclusive Education Centers (IE). At least 30 students must attend each center, and the department has released `20.6 lakh for completions. Top performing students should be encouraged to participate in state-level competitions.

The program includes artistic and cultural activities in IE centers on November 25 and a film screening on December 2. The events will conclude with students singing the national anthem in sign language on December 3.

The department has allocated Rs 20 lakh to schools across the state to improve the environment for children with disabilities in elementary sections. There are a total of 1.3 lakh children with disabilities who have been enrolled in public schools this year, the circular added.
