“Every competition, you roll the dice,” says Haley Bartels, whose script can’t put it down pumping blackon blood doping in the world of competitive cycling, won him a Nicholl Fellowship last year.

“You have to have a great neat script, but you also have to roll enough times to hit those double sixes. Thinking about it like that, the Nicholl was well worth not just that entry fee, but every dollar I spent on any contest.

This list can’t help you write a fantastic script, but it will help you find the contests with the best possible results. To help you spend less time researching screenplay contests and more time writing, we’ve compiled this year’s list of 15 screenplay contests worthy of submission focusing on the ones we think will make really the difference.

Nicholl Academy Scholarship

Registration fee: $50 to $90

Submission period: March 2 to May 2

With the support of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Nicholl Fellowship has become one of the most prestigious screenplay competitions. Each year, five amateur screenwriters receive $35,000, with the hope that they will write a new screenplay within the year, under the mentorship of an Academy member. All scripts are read twice, quarter-finals are judged by industry professionals, and semi-finals are judged by real Academy members.

Former scholarship recipients include Alfredo Botello (F9), Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings), and Rebecca Sonnenshine (The boys). Bartels, who we quoted in our introduction, noticed an immediate difference when she became one of five fellows last year.
“Winning the Nicholl changed the trajectory of my life. It launched my career in ways I could never have imagined,” she says.

Before we get into this one, you might want to listen to the five current Nicholl Fellows on the Filmmaker podcast, talking about their scripts and what they have in common. All five fellows agree that Nicholl likes very personal stories. This doesn’t necessarily mean autobiographical stories – it means stories that no one but you could write. You can read their advice in this story and in more detail on our podcast, available on Apple or Spotify or here:

Atlanta Film Festival Screenplay Competition

Registration fee: $30 to $100

Submission period: June 10 to November 18

One of the most exciting things about the Atlanta awards is that winners of shorts, pilots and features are invited to the festival (which also happens to be one of our 50 film festivals worth the entrance fee) to participate in a staged reading of an excerpt with the actors of the SAG.

“The staged reading was my favorite part of the whole process. My script is about a group of Jewish friends who plan a robbery at a Swiss bank, recovering long-lost Nazi gold. It’s inspired by of my grandmother’s experience fleeing Europe during the war, and the festival was kind enough to dedicate the reading to her. Through and through, they nailed the personal touch,” said the 2020 winner , Val Bodurtha. Filmmaker. She added that the festival “also put me in touch with a very competent mentor in the world of comedy! As a comedy writer first and foremost, I felt particularly seen.

Three feature film winners are also invited to an all-expenses-paid retreat to meet industry professionals and a workshop on their screenplays. Winners will also receive a cash prize of $250-500, a travel stipend, and an All-Access badge to the festival.

Austin Film Festival

Registration fee: $40 to $80

Submission period: March 25 to May 16

The Austin Film Festival — another one of our 50 film festivals worth the entry fee — is a juggernaut of a screenwriting competition and festival. AFF is the place to be for screenwriters, whether your screenplay is accepted or not.

Contest winners receive cash prizes and the coveted bronze typewriter trophy, but the biggest draw is meeting your peers at the historic Driskill Hotel in downtown Austin. If you don’t place and just attend the conference, you’ll still find that networking opportunities are everywhere: you can attend multiple roundtables and workshops with professional writers, managers, executives, and agents.

Blacklist Features Lab

Listing fee: $30 per month for script hosting

Submission period: January 5 to July 17

Six to eight writers are selected for The Black List Lab, a month-long program in September. It will begin virtually and end with an in-person workshop in Los Angeles, where screenwriters will work on a feature film script during one-on-one sessions with mentors and peer-to-peer workshops.

Former Black List Lab alumni include Noga Pnueli, whose 2018 screenplay Meet Cute is being turned into a film starring Kaley Cuoco and Pete Davidson.

“Through their various programs — their website, their writing lab, and their live readings — Blacklist gave me the exposure I needed to launch my career,” Pnueli said. Filmmaker. “But perhaps even more helpfully, the community they build within and around their writers is one that has provided me with the solidarity, support and knowledge I need to maintain and further develop my career without losing the mind.”

A previous Parade of Nations at the Llangollen Eisteddfod

Organizers are determined to welcome competitors from around the world despite continued travel disruptions, and say there will be hybrid competitions with options to compete live or digitally on large screens in the Royal International Pavilion.

This year will see a shortened event taking place from July 7-10, instead of the usual week-long eisteddfod.

As well as competitions on the main stage, there will be activity on the outdoor stages, as well as public performances around the town and at a number of locations in North East Wales.

Applications are now open for over 20 different categories, with the full program and application information available on the eisteddfod website.

Llangollen executive producer Camilla King said: “We look forward to welcoming friends from around the world to experience the true meaning of Eisteddfod, friendly competition and shared joy of playing, all in the beautiful surroundings of Llangollen, North Wales.

“In addition to our new digital hybrid format, contestants may notice other changes to our competitions this year, which we hope will inspire them to come join us in our 75th anniversary celebrations.”

“In light of the continued travel disruptions due to Covid-19, we are introducing a series of hybrid competitions for the first time, with options to compete digitally via large screens in the pavilion, in front of referees and a live audience. Our goal is to make participation accessible to many more amateur artists this summer.”

She said the crown jewel of the Eisteddfod would be the Choir of the World competition on July 9, which for 2022 is joined by the Pendine International Voice of the Future and Dance Champions awards.

“It will be an exciting celebration of outstanding international artists,” said Camilla.

New for 2022 are the Show Choirs, Contemporary Dance, Young Composer, Young Folk Instrumental Ensemble and Junior Instrumentalist competitions.

There is also the usual variety of choral and solo singing, dancing, folk music, instrumental performances, and a special non-competitive series.

“The International Eisteddfod welcomes over 4,000 performers during the week-long program and is an exquisite celebration of international music, culture, creativity and collaboration. It is now a key driver of cultural tourism in North Wales and attracts over 35,000 visitors each year.

Austin Film Festival & Writers Conference will host another year filled with compelling new stories through its annual screenplay and film competitions.

Renowned for championing the writer’s contribution to film and television, AFF competitions serve as an essential career springboard for aspiring writers and filmmakers looking to break into the entertainment industry. Building on its twenty-nine-year history, AFF looks forward to continuing to celebrate and support unknown storytellers through its screenplay, teleplay, podcast, playwriting, film and number series.

VJ Boyd, 2008 Teleplay finalist and writer/producer of hit shows such as SWAT and Justified added: “One of the first signs of hope that I might have a future in this industry, [was when] one of my TV specs, a Mad Men spec, made it to the bottom 3 in Austin. I was offered a producer badge to attend. It was very encouraging.”

Accepted writers and filmmakers will have the opportunity to experience AFF’s premier programming at the 29th Annual Writers’ Conference, to be held this year from October 27 to November 3, 2022. Known for its insider look at the art, craft, and the business of film and television, the avenues of the writers’ conference have widened to also explore exciting new frontiers of storytelling such as writing for video games. Selected filmmakers will present their films to enthusiastic Austin audiences and panels of leading industry professionals.

Filmmaker and 2018 AFF-nominated Judas Collar writer/director Allison James explains, “Because of winning Austin, I was able to get representation with an amazing team at WME and Grandview. I feel so lucky to now have a great team behind me and I’m currently developing two feature film projects – one in Australia and one in the US.”

In order to continue to serve the creative community, the AFF team constantly evaluates its programs to ensure that all writers and filmmakers will benefit from the experience offered by the competitions and the writers’ conference. After evaluating what has benefited participants in the past while assessing where the entertainment industry is today, AFF looks forward to continuing its mission of serving emerging storytellers.

It’s exhibition season, solo and beyond. Here’s a quick guide to what we’ve seen over the past few days, and we recommend checking out these destinations as well. At Foundry, the arts fraternity scanned QR codes on couches, at DIAC, soothing live music set the mood, and virtually, the excitement of voting on a platform set the mood.

Harmonious Disquiet

Akshay Arora, an Indian artist based in Dubai, derives his relief from painting from experimenting with textures, mediums and colors. His home ground is the non-figurative, contemporary and abstract, where colors, marks and textures speak to the viewer. In her first solo art exhibition, Harmonious Disquiet, Arora draws inspiration from Eastern philosophies, such as Vedanta and Buddhism. The paintings, although diverse in appearance, share certain common traits. A departure from traditional standards of composition and design; an ambivalent and often snappy emotional tone that reflects contemporary life and values; the use of bright but discordantly banal color harmonies; and a tense yet playful presentation of objects in a primitivist manner that communicates a sense of inner disturbance and ambiguity. “To the extent that creativity is a rebellion against the status quo, it is by definition an attempt to unify conflicting ideas. However, the beauty of creativity should not be limited to the arrival of a successful solution. The process of unification, in itself, can also be beautiful; if only for its intention and boldness,” shares Akshay.

At: Foundry, Downtown Dubai, until January 10, 2022

circle of life

This is the second solo art exhibition by Dubai-based Indian artist Pari Sagar. Entitled Circle of Life, the works on display are about her self-expression and creative freedom as an artist. “It’s called Circle of Life because when the world faced a global pandemic in 2020, everyone took a break to reflect and look within. For many, this was the most difficult period of their lives. It gave Mother Nature an opportunity to heal, recharge and replenish,” Sagar said. “This path to self-discovery turned into works of art for me.” The exhibition opened earlier this month with the support of Yasser Al Gergawi, President of the National Theater Dubai and Director of Programs and Partnerships at the Ministry of Tolerance and Khalil Abdul Wahid, Director of Visual Arts, Authority culture and arts of Dubai. Sagar shared how Circle of Life taught him to center himself, recreate himself, realign himself. “I had unconsciously created circles in all my paintings, a form of self-meditation and healing. The show represents hope, faith and love in their purest essence.

At: Gallery 76, Dubai International Art Center (DIAC), Dubai until 24 December

50 years of the UAE

More than 100 works of art were received by artists from 15 countries for a competition organized by ArtsCrafts to celebrate the 50th year of the United Arab Emirates. The online contest was opened to vote and the winners were announced earlier last week based on the vote and decisions of the judging panel. Mohan Ramesh Jadhav (India), Jairaj Kumar (India) and Saleena Khaliq (Qatar) won the top three prizes respectively. “We have kept the competition online to ensure that we are able to support artists around the world and help publicize their works on social media,” said Anil Kejriwal, founder of the forum. A special India Popular Choice Award went to Saraswati Sharma (India), a determined artist, who painted the work using her legs.

Looks like it was NBC vs. Fox, the One Chicago dramas vs. vocal competitions in premiere week on Wednesday, September 22. So, what has prevailed?

Well, the premieres of The Masked Singer and Survivor are tied for victory in the rankings for adults aged 18-49 (1.0), although both fell from their finals the previous season. (Both also lost viewers, with Survivor coming in fourth behind the three Chicagos in that figure.)

Chicago Fire was watched by the most viewers (7 million), followed by Med (6.54 million) and PD (6.35 million). While the first two lost a few viewers in last season’s finals, PD was roughly even.

When it comes to ABC comedies, The Goldbergs and Home Economics gained a few viewers in last season’s finals, while The Conners was roughly equal. However, compared to its last new live episode (in February 2020), The Conners was down significantly both in viewership (3.37 million vs. 6.2) and rating (0.6 vs. 1, 11). The network closed the evening with the comeback drama A Million. Little Things, which had been declining viewers since the Season 3 finale (2.0 million vs. 2.5).

Also see “The Wonder Years”: How did the reboot compare to the original? (POLL) This reimagined version takes a new perspective by exploring the ’60s through the eyes of a young black boy.

As for the new shows of the night, Alter Ego drew 2.85 million viewers and 3.07 million watched the reboot of The Wonder Years. While the latter may have been the most watched debut of the night, however, it falls to fourth place for the season so far, behind NCIS: Hawai’i (6.33million Monday at 10 / 9c ), FBI: International (6.24 million Tuesday at 10 / 9c), and Ordinary Joe (3.81 million Monday at 10 / 9c).

September is a huge month for screenwriting competitions, with some of the biggest hitters – like the Atlanta Film Festival Screenwriting Contest and the Final Draft Big Break Screenwriting Contest – giving you a chance to finally transform your years of hits caffeinated in the career of your dreams.

We offer the following list of some of the most important, prestigious and potentially transformative competitions to give you the motivation to start this crazy race to the finish line (or better yet, a confident and well-deserved walk to the finish line). on arrival line).

Screenwriting contests care less than you might expect about bolding the headers of your scenes. But they care a lot about your voice, your character development, and, yes, grammar. (And be sure to spell your character names the same – every time.) When you do your last run – hopefully not at 11:59 p.m. on the night of the last deadline), you might want to be checking out our recent poll on What The Screenwriting Contests Want.

And now here’s 1o that you might want to enter in September, along with how much they cost, what they offer to competitors, and if you can always apply later if you miss their deadlines. They are organized from the earliest September deadlines at the latest. And please check their Film Freeway pages or competition websites for details on discounts, additional prizes, etc.

Scriptapalooza Scenario Contest and SHORTS Contest

Opening date : September 1st

Costs: Short film, $ 30; feature $ 50.

Don’t panic – September 1 is the opening date, not the final deadline. It is not until April 4, 2022. Scriptapalooza awards over $ 50,000 in cash and software prizes, and the first place winner receives $ 10,000 in cash. The competition also promises to promote, showcase and support not only the winners, but also the semi-finalists (and anyone who ranks higher) for a year – to producers, managers and agents. “No other screenplay competition in the world does this,” notes its website. Besides the contest itself, Scriptapalooza gives very good detailed, constructive and flawless feedback. It costs $ 120 for screenplays and $ 85 for shorts, but in my opinion it’s worth it, especially if you are submitting a particular script for the first time. (I got feedback from Scriptapalooza on a script three years ago that was quite difficult – but also well reasoned, fair and correct. I rewrote almost everything and got a lot more positive feedback on the versions. other competitions.) If you wait until the final deadline in April, the cost goes up to $ 70 for screenplays and $ 50 for short films. (Or more, with comments.)

SCENARIO

Extended deadline: September 3

Costs: Short film, $ 55; Play, $ 65, TV spec script, $ 65; Characteristic, $ 65.

Hurry. This September 3 deadline is the real and final deadline. The good news is, you won’t have to wait months to see how you fare, as the online rewards date is also approaching – October 10. STORYLINE is a spin-off of the DaVinci International Film Festival in Los Angeles. It’s newer than most of the other festivals on the list, and there aren’t any huge cash prizes: you’ll be competing for a custom glass trophy, a prize package that includes software and services. , and eligibility for your film to be optional or developed with manufacturing partners.

BlueCat Scenario Competition

Early registration deadline: September 12

Costs: Short film $ 45, pilot $ 55, feature film $ 60.

Details: BlueCat was founded in 1998 by Gordy Hoffman, whose film Love Liza, starring her late brother, Philip Seymour Hoffman, won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival. He has taught screenwriting at USC and UCLA, and has conducted workshops around the world. BlueCat is offering big prizes including $ 5,000 for the grand prize winner. If you miss the deadline for early registrations, there are three more deadlines each month through December, with prices increasing by $ 5 each month. Because good writing is all about rewriting, BlueCat allows you to resubmit your work until February 21, 2022, adjusting the script based on the comments included in your registration fee. Resubmissions cost $ 35 for short films, $ 45 for pilots and $ 50 for feature films. There are more details on the site, which also includes a lot of good screenwriting resources.

Script pipeline

Pre-registration: September 15th

Costs: TV scriptwriting or writing contest, $ 25

You’re playing the long game with this one, in every sense of the word. First, September 15 is the pre-registration date – the final deadline is far away, May 31, 2022. But also, Script Pipeline is more interested in long-term career development than in the immediate gratification of an employee. Victoire. . He boasts that over $ 8 million worth of scripts and pilots have been sold by Script Pipeline’s writers, and that many scripts have been produced since its debut in 1999. He eschews a one-size-fits-all approach in favor of long-term promotion. term of screenwriters, helping them represent land and opportunities. Recent successes include Crosby Selander, whose finalist screenplay Bring me was sold to Legendary last year for seven minifigures. Prizes include $ 25,000 each for screenwriting and television writing winners, $ 2,500 each for screenwriting and television writing finalists, and presentations to managers, producers, agents, directors and others. Keep in mind that while you have plenty of time to format your script, the costs can go up to $ 70 if you wait until May 31 to submit it.

The first draft of the script pipeline

Regular deadline: September 15th

Costs: TV scenarios or pilots, $ 55

No, we haven’t accidentally listed Script Pipeline twice. The First Look Project is different from the original Script Pipeline, according to the competition, in that “entries for First Look are judged equally on writing ability and commercial potential, as well as concept originality and solid understanding of gender and market. trends. ”The First Look project aims to connect winners with production and management companies, and also offers prizes: $ 2,500 to the winner of each of the four feature film genre categories (Action / Sci- Fi, Comedy, Drama, Horror / Thriller), as well as $ 2,500 each to the winners of the 1 hour and half hour pilots. If you miss the September 15 deadline, you can still hit the deadline. October 8, when the cost goes up to $ 60, or the extended deadline of October 30, when it goes up to $ 65. Aim for September so you can spend October designing the perfect Halloween costume.
